Diagnostic ultrasound is the use of high-frequency sound waves to view internal body structures. A small device called a probe is used to transmit sound waves into the body, which are then reflected off organs and body tissues. Those reflections (echoes) bounce back to the probe and are converted electronically into images. If blood flow is being assessed, audible sound as well as an image can be produced.
